Nazareth Housing's Successes

Thank You Nazareth Housing!

Lucy is a 36- year old Latina, single mother whose son was diagnosed with lupus at age 10.  She had been living in Spanish Harlem for 20 years.  When her son became hospitalized and unable to care for himself, she had to stop working to provide him with 24-hour care. Living on a modest fixed income with food stamp benefits, Lucy struggled to make ends meet with the mounting medical expenses she faced for her son. When the family came to Nazareth Housing, they owed $3,700 when her public assistance case was erroneously closed by the city.

Nazareth Housing’s Prevention Specialist reviewed the family’s situation and was able to secure a “one-shot deal” from the Human Resources Administration to cover a large portion of the arrears. Through the efforts of Nazareth Housing, Lucy’s public assistance was restored, and the remaining rent arrears of $531 was funded by Nazareth Housing’s Housing Stability Support Project (HSSP).

Advocating for Lucy throughout her Housing Court process, our staff ensured that Lucy and her son were able to remain stably housed. Lucy received on-site counseling for resource management and budgeting skills to help her retain her housing and stabilize her family. Ultimately, we were also able to ensure that her rent would not rise every year by getting her a Disability Rent Increase Exception (DRIE).

I am a single mother with two small children, and an abusive relationship put me in the hospital.  When I was released, I went home to find that my living room furniture, TV and bed were taken by my abuser.  Since I’m on Public Assistance, I only get $100.00 and am waiting to qualify for food stamps.  I called around and was told to call Nazareth Housing.  I am most grateful for all the help and the  furniture they gave me.  ~SG & Family

I wish to express my gratitude towards the services I was provided at Nazareth Housing when I arrived at your doors as a homeless single mother of a 3-year old-child. At Nazareth Housing my son and I found shelter, and strength from the social worker’s knowledge. Each and every workshop taught me life building skills. . . Currently, I am a proud mother of two boys and I have been able to start my own business. I firmly believe my time at Nazareth Housing taught me the skills I needed to survive and have faith in my capability. ~AK
